Topic of Conversation

How to Have Hard Conversations - The Practice of Empathetic Listening: As people of faith, we hold a common vision. We dream of a unified human community who love God and one another. We try and practice a faith that acts justly, loves mercy, and walks humbly. But the truth of the matter is that unity is extremely difficult. We carry different opinions, perspectives, life experiences, and personal convictions. We don't always agree. And sometimes we strongly disagree. We have seen what happens when disagreement is done poorly. Even violently. So instead, we avoid risking conflict. We live in fear and broken trust. So what do we do? How do we (re)learn how to have hard conversations well? By practicing practical empathetic listening skills, we stand a chance of remembering the humanity of the person sitting across from us. And maybe even our own. Join us for conversation with Yvette Massey and Blair Zant from the Center for Congregational Excellence of the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church to (re)learn how to have hard conversations well.

Guest Speakers:

The Rev. Yvette D. Massey
The Rev. Yvette D. Massey is a graduate of Clemson University (BS in Nursing) and the Morehouse School of Religion of the Interdenominational Theological Center (MDiv). First ordained in 2001 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Pendleton, S.C., Rev. Massey was ordained an Elder in full connection in the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church in 2005. As a pastor, Rev. Massey has served Cascade UMC, Warren Memorial UMC, Red Oak UMC, and the historic Central UMC in Atlanta, the former pastorate of the Civil Rights activist Rev. Dr. Joseph Echols Lowery. Currently she serves an Associate Director of the Center for Congregational Excellence in the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church. She will complete her doctoral studies in homiletics September 2019. Rev. Massey has a passion for the people of God, and her mission is to reach the outcast for Christ. She believes that parish ministry and community ministry go hand in hand.

The Rev. Blair Boyd Zant
Rev. Blair Boyd Zant is a pastor, preacher, wife, and mother, and an Associate Director of Congregational Excellence for the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. She is a proud graduate of the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and Duke Divinity School (Go Blue Devils!). As a pastor, she has served Sardis UMC, Sandy Springs UMC, and most recently Cannon UMC in Snellville, where she served as Co-Senior Pastor alongside her husband Will Zant. In her current role, she dedicates her ministry to supporting, encouraging and resourcing churches across North Georgia. Specifically, she assists congregations with leadership development, vision-casting and goal-setting, ministry innovation, and improving their ability to welcome new people well. Her work is meant to honor Christ, and promote true collaboration between congregants, between congregations, and between congregations and their communities. “I want everything I do to bring about Oneness: with Christ, with Others, and in Ministry to the World.”
