Flying no flag of convenience, Santa Claus uses ice floes around the North Pole to generate and cloak highly mobile capital and productive labor. His superior delivery system for gifts flagrantly disregards all national borders. Santa, let's face it, is a sovereign individual.
Less fancifully, we see that the economic and social core of American life is shifting today, as the unprecedented mobility of people and capital is eroding governments’ traditional monopoly on lawmaking, fundamentally altering the dynamic between people and the state. For the Santarchy Ball, we are bringing together economists, philosophers, and social critics to discuss the new social contracts that might form once we take opt-in/opt out governance seriously. Whereas political theorists of the past imagined hypothetical social contracts agreed upon by people in an imaginary state of nature—even more fanciful than Santa Claus—we're excited to discuss what new, real social contracts might emerge in the coming age of cryptographic goverance.
